Marletta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Title of Project:<\/b><br \/>\nEigenvalue Problems for (large) Matrices<br \/>\n<b>Code:&nbsp;<\/b>MM2122A<br \/>\n<b>Supervisor:&nbsp;<\/b>Professor Marco Marletta<br \/>\n<b>Project description:<\/b><br \/>\nThis project is about solving the matrix eigenvalue problem <i>Au = \u03bbu<\/i>. The<br \/>\nultimate aim is to deal with the case when <i>A<\/i> is a large sparse matrix, but the<br \/>\nstudent will rst study methods which are used for full matrices. For sparse<br \/>\nmatrices, it will involve studying numerical methods which exploit the sparsity<br \/>\npatter, together with possible additional properties such as being Hermitian.<br \/>\nMany of the algorithms to be studied are described in `Matrix Computations&#8217;<br \/>\nby Golub and Van Loan, and are implemented in software packages such as<br \/>\nLAPACK and ARPACK. The ability to programme in a suitable language such<br \/>\nas MATLAB or Python will be important.
