The project descriptions on this site are provided to help you to choose your Year 3<\/span> or Year 4 project. You should study the project descriptions carefully, taking note of any prerequisite Year 2 modules and Year 3 modules that are recommended for concurrent study. However, the written information that is provided should only be viewed as<\/span> a starting point for making your choices. You are <\/span>strongly recommended to discuss things further with the supervisors<\/span><\/b> of the projects that you are most interested in, as well as with your personal tutor. Some project supervisors may provide a list of time<\/span>s when they will be available to discuss projects with individual students. But in most cases you will need to make your own arrangements to see a potential supervisor, for example by emailing the supervisor to determine a mutually convenient time for an a<\/span>ppointment. Note that the submission deadline is after teaching ends, so many supervisors might be occupied with other matters. You are therefore most likely to be able to find a mutually convenient appointment with a prospective supervisor, if you contact<\/span> them before teaching ends, even if the appointment takes place after teaching ends.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you have decided on which projects you are interested in, you will need to submit a list of four project choices, in order of preference, <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>. This form is to be submitted by Friday 25 June at 4pm. Decisions about project allocations to individual students will be made i<\/span>n the summer recess, after the resit examination boards.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Instead of choosing one of the listed projects, it is sometimes possible for a student to propose an individual project in another area of work that they have already developed an interest in. For e<\/span>xample, a student who is currently completing a professional training placement may wish to undertake a year three project to study and develop a problem pertinent to their placement work. Typically, such a project would, if approved, be supervised by an i<\/span>nternal supervisor, based in the School of Mathematics, as well as by an external supervisor from the professional training workplace.<\/span>
\nIf you wish to propose such a project you will need to:<\/span><\/p>\n

(i) obtain the support of a supervisor based in the School of Mat<\/span>hematics;<\/span>
\n(ii) obtain the support of an external supervisor (if this is appropriate);<\/span>
\n(iii) choose \u201cother\u201d as your first choice on the <\/span>webform<\/span><\/a> and provide the information requested.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
